Ringo Starr leaves Surrey

Edward Lloyd

Country lover Ringo Starr MBE is selling his 200 acre Surrey estate and moving to California.

The 74 year old drummer and former Beatle and his glamorous wife, former Bond Girl Barbara Bach, have decided to sell the 17th Century Rydinghurst Estate near Cranleigh, which he bought in 1999.

The enthusiastic garden lover has been persuaded by the California sunshine to move to Los Angeles, where he already owns a home in Beverly Hills.

Music and photography feature strongly among his many interests.  Born in Liverpool, he moved from London to Sunny Heights in St George's Hill in Weybridge Surrey in 1965, with his fellow Beatles living nearby, to escape the daily attention of the world's press.  He married his first wife Maureen in 1965, and in 1971 Ringo and Maureen moved into John Lennon's former house Tittenhurst Park in Sunninghill Berkshire, with their son the drummer Zak Starkey.  The couple divorced in 1975 and Ringo returned to the freedom and space of Surrey with his second wife, former Bond Girl Barbara Bach, to buy Rydinghurst from Count George Bardeau.

When not touring the world and playing his favourite drums with his All-Starr Band, he is a keen photographer, as demonstrated in his book Photograph.  The book contains many vivid black and white photographs from the 1960's, including those he took of the Beatles, when outside of the car they spent so much time travelling in.  Wistful of the photos which take him back in time, he loves pictures put together, showing different times of his life.  At the time he never thought there would be a whole book of his photographs.  He has donated royalties from the limited edition books to the Lotus Foundation, the charity he and Barbara founded.

A devotee to healthy living, working out, and a vegetarian diet, Ringo is a regular and welcome attendee at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.   He and Barbara have supported Chelsea's WaterAid Garden, to bring clean water to the world's poorest communities.

Richard Starkey MBE, who has brought pleasure to millions, England will miss you.
