The UK's 117 billionaires are doing very nicely, and have increased their wealth substantially through the recession, according to The Sunday Times Rich List.

Among those who have made their mark are the Sixth Duke of Westminster, worth £8.56billion.  He inherited the Grosvenor Estate, 300 acres of Mayfair and Belgravia.  His second daughter Lady Edwina is married to the award winning TV historian Dan Snow.

Among his charitable activities, The Duke's interest in military volunteering is manifest in the Duke Of Westminster's Awards, which are won by outstanding cadets who overcome adversity, help in the community, and go on to educational and work opportunities.

Kirsten Rausing with her brother Jorn are worth £8.7billion.  The talented racehorse breeder and philanthropist inherited from her father, Tetra Pak packaging industrialist Gad Rausing, and runs the successful Lanwades Stud in Newmarket.

Philanthropist Earl Cadogan and Family are worth £4.8billion.  His group owns 93 acres of Chelsea including the Cadogan Estates, and the Gunter Estates in Kensington.

Sir Philip Green and Lady Tina are worth £3.5billion.  The fashion retailer Sir Philip and the acclaimed superyacht interior designer Lady Tina, own BHS, Topshop, Topman, Dorothy Perkins and Miss Selfridge, having disposed of BHS.  Sir Philip commutes by private jet between London and Monaco, where he lives with his family.  He is a well known host on his Monaco based 207ft super yacht The Lionheart.  Daughter Chloe is a successful shoe designer.

Former mobile phone entrepreneur John Caudwell is worth £1.45billion, and owns two superyachts.  The philanthropist has unveiled his latest Mayfair development project, while concentrating his energies on Caudwell Children, a charity for severely disabled children.  By undertaking to fund the administration expenses, John Caudwell has guaranteed that all funds raised go direct to supporting disabled children and their families.  Countrywide fundraising culminates in the annual London celebrity supported glittering Butterfly Ball.

Lord Michael Ashcroft is worth £1.32billion, owns a private jet and two 150ft yachts.  He owns the largest collection of Victoria Cross medals in the world, starting with buying one VC at Sotheby's in 1986.  Having been drawn to the bravery involved by the Royal Navy submarine diver awarded, and by the other recipients, he decided to continue collecting for the rest of his life. Following his £5million donation to the Imperial War Museum, his collection is on display there in a gallery bearing his name.  His book Victoria Cross Heroes, details the history of his collection.

Dame Mary Perkins and family are worth £1.45billion.  With 2,000 stores in 10 countries, Dame Mary's company Specsavers employs 30,000 people worldwide, and sells more than 12million frames a year.  Among the charities she supports are for the elderly and children.  The annual Specsavers Spectacle Of The Year Awards in London, are a celebrity supported highlight.

Sir Cameron Mackintosh is worth £1.05billion. The outstanding theatre producer owns nine historic London theatres, the Prince Of Wales, Geilgud, Queen's, Wyndham's, Noel Coward, Novello, Prince Edward, Victoria Palace, and is renaming The Ambassadors, The Sondheim Theatre.  Having brought pleasure to millions over fifty years, producing more musicals than anyone else in history, Phantom Of The Opera and Cats are the longest running musicals of all time, and Les Miserables the longest running musical in the world.  His spectacular production of Miss Saigon has been followed by the stage version of Mary Poppins.  He has indulged his passion for architecture by spending £40million on the refurbishment of his theatres.
