The UK Sepsis Trust Inaugural Ball

Edward Lloyd

Television News Anchor Mark Austin invited fellow presenters and friends, to the glittering inaugural fundraising Ball at the Waldorf Hilton Hotel, in London's Aldwych.

The UK Sepsis Trust was founded  by Chief Executive Dr Ron Daniels and fellow doctors, to raise awareness of the condition.  The doctors had all seen the devastating results of Sepsis, and wanted to fund an educational campaign.

Among the guests present were Gary Lineker with his wife Danielle Bux, Piers Morgan, Dr Ellie Cannon, Dr Dawn Harper, Dr Hilary Jones, Charlotte Hawkins, Andrea Catherwood, Natasha Kaplinsky, Fay Ripley, Sean Fletcher, Nina Hossain, Steve Scott, Ranvir Singh, Dr Rosemary Leonard, QPR Chief Executive Philip Beard, and Sepsis Trust Ambassador Patrick Kane.

Sepsis is the current term for septicaemia or blood poisoning.  The disease kills over 8 million people worldwide each year, more people than AIDs, prostrate and breast cancer combined.  Recent data shows that sepsis claims even more lives globally than tobacco.  In the UK, it's estimated that there are 102,000 cases of severe sepsis every year, with a staggering 37,000 deaths.  Most cases are due to familiar infections like pneumonia, urinary tract infections, bites, cuts or stings.  Raising recognition of the disease and treating a patient in the 'Golden Hour' is the most effective way of saving lives.
